MEDICINE HAT, AB -- Cypress-Medicine Hat NDP candidate Peter Mueller has faced some criticism after a tweet from 2011 resurfaced.

The tweet reads:

“Election. Useless. Canadian idiots will re-elect Adolf Harper again – sad – and we’ll become more American even more quickly.”

It's believed Muellers two twitter accounts @atktne and @petermuellerndp have been deleted.

Mueller posted a statement on his Facebook page on April 1 apologizing for the comment, saying it was not respectful.

His statement reads:

“Hi folks,

The UCP are circulating a tweet of mine about the 2011 Federal Election. There is a broad spectrum of political discussion in Canada, and as we express ourselves we must do so with respect. I want to apologize for this comment, as it was not respectful.
I’m proud of the platform that was released yesterday and our commitments to hire teachers, nurses, and expand access to childcare. I’m looking forward to getting back out on the doors this afternoon and talking to folks in Medicine Hat about this and the other election issues that are concerning them today.

See you on the doorsteps!

Peter”
