BARNWELL, AB – Provincials slipped out of the grasp of the Monsignor McCoy Colts senior boys basketball team on Saturday night.

The Colts fell by a 90-81 score in the 3A South Zone final against the W.R. Myers Rebels, having to settle for a silver medal to see their season come to a close.

McCoy held a 70-67 lead after three quarters, however the Rebels stormed back in the fourth quarter to outscore the Colts 23-11 to secure the provincial berth.

Eight Grade 12 students will say goodbye to the Colts program including guards Gabe Dael, Ethan Gripp, Chayce Davies, Kristian Guieb and Wildon Gloin, forward Daniel Kuon, and centres Jaxon Turcotte and Ayden Miller.

The McCoy senior girls also picked up a silver medal at zones after suffering an 86-79 loss to W.R. Myers as well.

Their season will continue this week in Athabasca, as they secured a provincial berth on Friday night with their 76-52 victory over the Crescent Heights Vikings in semi-final action.

In the 4A South Zone qualifier on Saturday, the Medicine Hat High SV Mohawks fell 85-65 to the host LCI Rams in the bronze medal match to come home with a fourth place finish.

They’ll also be headed to provincials, earning one of four tickets with an 87-69 win versus Magrath on Friday in the consolation bracket semi-finals.
