Rattlers women's basketball team eliminated at ACAC Championship; men in medal contention

FORT MCMURRAY, AB — The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s basketball team will not be returning to the national championships this year.

The Rattlers, who won a silver medal at last year’s Alberta College’s Athletic Conference championship, which granted them a berth at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, lost a narrow 74-67 game to the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings Thursday evening.

Jessica Haenni and Alyssa Banez led the way for the Vikings through the game, scoring 21 and 20 points, respectively, during the game.

Kiana Mintz led the Rattlers in scoring with 19 points. Kendall Kuntz recorded 15 points for her team, with Katelyn Rozdeba adding 10 through the game.

The Vikings will play the Keyano College Huskies at 8 p.m. on Friday, with the winner advancing to the gold medal game.

The Rattlers will take on the Lethbridge College Kodiaks at 3 p.m., with the winning team advancing to the fifth and sixth place game on Saturday.

Men’s basketball

In Vermilion, the Rattlers men’s basketball team are in contention for a medal at the ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship.

The Rattlers topped Keyano College 92-85 to open the tournament Thursday evening.

Kieron Burgess led the Rattlers with 29 points, with Jaamel Slack scoring 19 points during the game.

Emmanuel Ansah scored 21 points for Keyano.

The Rattlers take on the SAIT Trojans at 8 p.m. on Friday, with a spot in Saturday’s gold medal game on the line. The losing team will play for the bronze medal on Saturday.
