EDMONTON, AB – A red-hot start to the North-South Challenge tournament for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers men’s basketball team, besting the host NAIT Ooks on Saturday afternoon.

The Rattlers were a model of consistency in their second test at the tournament, building up a 15 point lead at halftime en-route to 78-59 victory over the Ooks.

Starters Jaamel Slack and DeAngelo Ashley led the Rattlers offence in the opening quarter against NAIT, combining for 13 points to put the visitors ahead 22-14.

Strong play from the field and at the line helped Medicine Hat extend their lead even more in the second quarter, as the Rattlers shot 40 percent from the floor to go up on NAIT 43-28 at halftime.

Quiet for most of the afternoon, Jon Sappleton hit four shots plus a free throw to add 10 points to his totals and boost the Rattlers to a 65-44 lead after three quarters.

Medicine Hat’s offence went a bit cold in the fourth quarter converting on only four shots, but their lead was able to hold for a 78-59 win over NAIT.

Ashley, Slack, Sappleton, and Arthur Rosa all hit double-digits in points, while Ashley and Sappleton also posted double-doubles with 10 rebounds each.

The Rattlers improved their record to 2-0 in tournament play with Saturday’s win after taking down the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings 85-80 the previous night.

Up next for the Rattlers will be a rematch with the Vikings on Saturday night at 5:00 pm, while the men’s team will travel to Lethbridge College next Friday to get their ACAC regular season underway once again.
