LAC LA BICHE, AB – Can’t ask for a better opening round for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s golf team, occupying the top three spots at the 2018 ACAC North Regional Championships.
Medicine Hat’s Sierra Zukowski leads the 19 golfer field at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club, shooting an 11 over, 83 on Saturday to sit in first place after the first round.
Rattlers returnee Becky Martin isn’t far behind her teammate, shooting an 84 to sit one shot back of Zukowski.
The bronze medal spot is currently occupied by Nicole Schultz, who will also have a shot at the North Regional title as she’s five shots out of first place.
Medicine Hat’s fourth female member Ciara Bonogofski was a 29 over, 101 on Saturday and sits alone in 11th place heading into Sunday’s final round.
With three of their golfers sitting on the podium, the Rattlers also have a 21 stroke lead in the team competition, leading Concordia University with a score of 44 over par.
Rattlers veteran Matt Taylor is in the mix in the men’s competition meanwhile, shooting six over par on Saturday to finish his round tied for fourth and four shots behind leader Connor Beeston.
Newcomer Derek Whitson shot a 17 over, 89 in his first round of ACAC competition to sit tied for 20th, while Kent Lesko is one shot back and tied for 23rd with his teammate David Coldham.
Keaton Sulz shot a 98 on Saturday and is tied for 32nd at 26 over par, with Brady Resch rounding out the Rattlers golfers in 41st place at 32 over.
In the men’s team competition, Medicine Hat is just off the podium in fourth place after combining for a score of 59 over par.
Zukowski, Martin and Schultz will go for gold in the women’s division, while Taylor will try to capture the North Regional title in the men’s bracket in final round action on Sunday.
